What training is required for Wake County CERT members?
CERT training consists of approximately 20 hours spread over a 3 day period.
Classes are typically given on consecutive
Saturdays.
Volunteers are trained in a variety emergency response skills,including:
- Disaster Awareness and Preparedness
- Response Team Management
- Disaster Psychology
- Fire Suppression and Utilities Control
- Hazardous Materials Awareness
- Disaster Medical Operations
- Light Search and Rescue
- Terrorism Awareness
- Small Unit Leadership
To qualify for this free training, individuals do not need prior emergency preparedness training. All training must be completed to become a member of Wake County CERT.

Who may join Wake County CERT?
Any eligible citizen that would like to become a Wake County CERT, Inc member is required to participate in all modules of the instruction class taught by the City of Raleigh Fire Dept. After successful completion of basic training, the citizen can either go on to volunteer their time as a Wake County CERT, Inc “ technician” with a Wake County CERT, Inc team, having non-hazardous assignments and or other Administrative duties.
Eligible citizens are defined as anyone who lives or works in Wake County who is 18 years old or over, or ages 16 or 17 with signed parental permission form.
Applicants shall be admitted to membership on making application in writing and upon approval of the application by the membership committee of this Association.
What other continued training is available?
We strive to offer additional training/education to our Wake County Community Emergency Response Team members and their families. This continued education is above and beyond the required training to join our teams and is taken at your choice with no obligation.
These trainings are normally offered as programs at our regular monthly meetings and cover such subjects as:
Severe Weather Spotting
Training from a member of the National Weather Service to properly recognize storm formations, tornados, etc.
Home Disaster Planning
Learn the proper methods to set up disaster kits at home to be self-sufficient for the first few days after a
disaster. What should be in the kits? Where do you find it? How much do you need?
Refresher courses
Refreshers in First Aid, Light Search and Rescue, Light Firefighting, and other subjects taught in CERT classes.
CPR/AED Training
Chainsaw Safety
(required for a team before they are issued a chainsaw)
Emergency Communications Techniques
Amateur Radio
There are many licensed Amateur "Ham" Radio operators in Wake County CERT. We can arrange with the
Raleigh Amateur Radio Society for you to attend the classes they often offer to those wanting to take an
Amateur Radio exam.
Disaster Psychology
Help for working with disaster victim and their families and of handling the stress CERT workers can go through
themselves
